Sumerian Tiamat "shining personification" of the waters.
ENUMA ELISH: THE EPIC OF CREATION
THE FIRST TABLET
When in the height heaven was not named,
And the earth beneath did not yet bear a name,
And the primeval Apsu, who begat them,
And chaos, Tiamut, the mother of them both
Their waters were mingled together,
And no field was formed, no marsh was to be seen;
When of the gods none had been called into being,....
Tiamat was the "shining" personification of salt water who roared and smote in the chaos of original creation. She and Apsu filled the cosmic abyss with the primeval waters. She is "Ummu-Hubur who formed all things". Tiamat possessed the Tablets of Destiny. In the end Tiamat is killed, head crushed and blood poured out and whose body is used to re-create the universe.
